Days out from Harrogate - Knaresborough

September 06, 2023

Mother Shipton’s Cave is located on the A59 on the banks of the River Nidd between Harrogate and Knaresborough just as you are about to enter Knaresborough.

The Petrifying Well is England’s oldest visitor attraction, first recounted as such by King Henry Vlll’s antiquary in 1538. Since then it has been visited by millions of visitors.  There is very extensive car parking on site.  Charges are for a car and 4 passengers.  There is a beautiful shady walk along the river to the cave and well.  When we visited there were lots of young families enjoying some of the special features especially designed for them.  There was also a place to buy coffee and light snacks with plentiful seating close bye.

There are activities throughout the summer season, Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

The views of Knaresborough Castle and the old linen mill are stunning. It’s great to see these from the more unusual view point. We spent several hours exploring and relaxing.  It was a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. People with children were spending the day.
