Fountains Abbey (National Trust) 

Location: Fountains, Ripon HG4 3DY 

Originally a 12th century Cistercian monastery this Historical sight is the perfect place for children who love to explore ruins.  Fountains Abbey was one of the biggest and richest abbeys in the country leading up to the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. 

There is plenty to find and discover, with a water mill, café, farmhouse and a Georgian hall which was used as a hospital in world war one and later as a boarding house. 

Fountains Abbey has an adventure playground and a tree fort, perfect for young children to enjoy.

As well as the spectacular ruins, which are still in good condition, there is a pretty walk down to the lake, surrounded by some stunning Georgian gardens. There is also a cosy café, with a view of a lake, frequently visited by many species of birds.  

Fountains Abbey do allow dogs however, they must be kept on a lead as there are ground nesting birds.

Lightwater Valley

Location: North Stainley, Ripon HG4 3HT 

Lightwater Valley is a theme park with a difference. All the rides have been designed for children under 12. 

There are small roller coasters, merry-go-rounds and a traditional carousel.  You can also find both outdoor adventure play areas and soft play areas. 

Lightwater Valley have plenty of rides from a train to tractors and vintage cars.  For those wanting a little more excitement there is the “Dragon Drop”, “Eagle’s Claw” and “Guitar Swing”.

Brimham Rocks (National Trust) 

Location: Brimham Moor Road, Summerbridge, Harrogate, HG3 4DW

Who likes climbing? Brimham Rocks is a geological master piece dating back to the last ice age. These rock formations are great for climbing or just exploring at your own level. 

Suitable for the entire family, there are serval trails you can follow all leading to the café and there are spectacular views across the countryside. 

Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a lead as there are ground nesting birds.
