North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS)
May 27, 2023We are so excited! The North Yorkshire Open Studios are opening to the public again this summer.
June 3rd and 4th and again 10th and 11th June 2023 from 10 am until 5 pm you will have a chance to view behind the scenes of over 140 artists in their studios.
They will take you on a journey of discovery from the North York Moors and coasts to the Dales and beyond. We are expecting visitors from all over the region, extending to the NE, Lancashire and the Midlands. We hope guests and visitors from further afield will be attracted to this major event. The biggest of its kind in the UK. It is a great opportunity to discover emerging talents and visit well well established artists in their place of work.
The event is organised by the artists run collective known as North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOP), a not for profit community working to support hundreds of artists across many different art forms from painting, to ceramics, jewellery to glass to photography. All the creatives live in North Yorkshire, it is the one thing that they have in common.
From February to 12th May this year NYOS teamed with North York Morrs National Park to host a preview exhibition of some of the artists’ works in Whitby. Visitors to the exhibition were encouraged to vote for their favourite piece. The two winners will each receive £200 towards furthering their career in their chosen field.
The project manager for NYOS Garth Bayley, said: “The Open Studio Event is a chance to go ‘through the keyhole’ of an artists’ studio, appreciate the creative process, and meet and get to know the artist too.”
At Artists’ Cottages we collaborate with our artists. They entrust their works to us and to our guests. Their works on display are for sale. Our artists are known to us, it’s why they choose to work with us. We hope our guests experience something of this when staying with us.
In exploring the NYOS you will have the opportunity to see parts of North Yorkshire that may have escaped you!
Garth said “With the trend for slow travel and staycations, the art studio trail covers coastal spots in Scarborough, through to scenic National Parks including North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, alongside picturesque villages and vibrant market towns. It’s a wonderful opportunity to go on an artistic and cultural magical tour, visit the well-known attractions or explore lesser-known areas and experience this beautiful and diverse region with new eyes.”
Garth added: “Artists taking part will highlight attractions near their studios, such as castles, abbeys, beauty spots and visitor attractions to help visitors create itineraries for a full day, or even a weekend getaway break, perfect for culture vultures.”
The scheme is supported by the NYOS Patron, the Duchess of Devonshire.
Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Cavendish, said: “I’m delighted to support this inspiring and supportive platform, which is now in its 16thyear. North Yorkshire is home to some of the UK’s most beautiful scenery, and the source of inspiration for generations of artists, including Hockney, Hepworth and Turner.
She added: “This is an exciting opportunity to discover some incredible talent, as well as champion North Yorkshire as a vibrant place for art. It offers interactive, adventurous experiences as well as the chance to get your hands on some unique artworks.”
