Places to visit in North Yorkshire
July 09, 2021
Bolton Castle, set in Wensleydale, one of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales, about an hour from Harrogate is a great place to spend a day – at this time of the year, (July) when we went recently, there was a lively archery exhibition, what it lacked in skill was more than made up for by the humorous presentation. The audience, a mixture of all ages were captivated. An hour later it was the turn of the birds! Again the presentation was lively and informative- the birds did fly and the weather was perfect. The display finished with a stunning hawk who demonstrated exactly why they are such great hunters – speed is everything. The day rounded off with a trip to the boars – be careful of your fingers!
Bolton Castle was built in 1377, harboured Mary Queen of Scots and her entire entourage on her escape from Scotland. Was laid siege to during the Civil War and destroyed by Cromwell. For more history and information you need to visit.
There is a maze, a small vineyard and immaculately maintained gardens. The village is pretty. The views from the battlements are stunning- but be careful with children.
There is a large car park for which you do have to pay unless you buy tickets on line in advance. In which case take the ticket with you for a refund. We purchased the children’s goodie bag. It was well thought out with plenty to keep children occupied. The bag provided for children was really good- even for a 2 year old – she had fun with the crayons and toy. We enjoyed using the suggestions of things to look out for. Older children would certainly enjoy the contents and get more from it. Honestly one of the best thought out goody bag for children.
There is a tea room inside the castle serving sandwiches, cakes and hot and cold drinks. Very little for anyone with allergies
The gift shop has some unusual items.
The staff were friendly and informative.
