Stay Calm and Watch the Chosen
April 25, 2025The Chosen: The Last Supper is currently out in select cinemas across the United Kingdom, including The Light Cinema in Leeds.
At the moment they are only showing part 1 in the UK which includes the first two episodes of season 5. So far there is no information as to when part 2, 3, and 4 will be released in UK cinemas.
We were able to find some time out of our usual schedules to go and watch Part 1. Here are our thoughts. Warning there will be spoilers ahead, but come on you know how this story goes!
Can we still watch it?
Yes! Part 1 of the Last Supper will be shown in Cinemas nationally up until the 1st of May 2025. See their website for details and book your tickets.
What did we think?
Episode 1
Season 5 kicked off with a bang — or rather, a procession. Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem on a donkey, surrounded by his disciples and an electrified crowd, was nothing short of cinematic. The energy was palpable, the performances heartfelt, and the whole scene was made for the big screen.
But hey, this is The Chosen — of course there had to be a moment of tension. Before Jesus could even step into the city, the Sanhedrin made their obligatory appearance. Thankfully, this time the confrontation stayed verbal. No stones, just some good ol' holy friction.
One of my favorite moments? Zebedee trying to make friends with the very people who wanted to shut everything down. Classic. And when Simon Peter casually calls him “Zen” for the first time? I don’t know why it cracked me up, but it did — perfect little character moment.
The rest of the episode felt like the calm before the storm. There was a sweet scene where Jesus crashes a wedding, just soaking in the joy around him. It’s always nice to see that human side, especially with the shadow of what’s to come looming closer. That said, the pacing dipped a little here — not boring by any means, just a noticeable shift in energy.
But don’t worry — it all picks back up right before that cliffhanger ending. Now that’s how you set the stage for Episode 2.
Episode 2
Who is the stranger?
If you caught the penultimate episode of Season 4, you might’ve noticed a mysterious figure quietly scribbling away during the resurrection of Lazarus. No name. No backstory. Just... watching. Writing. Creepy? Intriguing? A bit of both.
Fast forward to Episode 2, and he’s back — this time with a subtle (but tense) run-in with Kaffni (spelling still up in the air). And yet, we still don’t know who he is! My initial theory? Luke. But historically, Luke didn’t show up until after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Then it hit me — what if it’s Mark? He’s often thought to have been in Jerusalem during this time, possibly just a teenager. And since he did write one of the Gospels, it kinda tracks. So for now, I’m staking my guess: young Mark.
Now, back to the episode!
Most of it unfolds at the main temple in Jerusalem, where Andrew and Philip reunite with some old friends from Season 3 who’ve come to celebrate their very first Passover. I thought it was a clever move — having Andrew, Philip, and Mary Magdalene walk them (and us) through the Jewish customs. Smart storytelling, plus great character moments.
Then, bam — the mood shifts. After getting to know the market vendors, it made Jesus flipping the tables and setting the animals loose hit way harder. You felt the weight of that scene.
But don’t worry, it wasn’t all fire and fury. There were some lighter moments too — like Simon Peter giving preaching a go (spoiler: it was a disaster), and John getting hilariously sidelined from his dad’s temple business deal. Still, he managed a quiet conversation with one of the temple stewards that might end up being way more important than it seemed. Foreshadowing? Maybe. We’ll see.
Of course this just a summary, and does compare to cinematic experience!
More Joanna yay!
If there is one character I am always excited to see, aside from the usual favourites, it has to be Joanna! Ok I have a slight bias, I am named after her, and this is possibly the first adaptation I have seen where Joanna has been included. She is mentioned in the Bible only a couple of times, more than some of the apostles (just saying), so it is nice to see her involvement. In fact she has a very important role this season, as always she sees to everyones needs, which in this instance is providing Jesus and his apostles, and his main disciples with a place to stay!
