Trails through the Dales

April 25, 2023

Sunday afternoon was sunny as we set off from Harrogate. We were heading into the Dales following one of the 'Yorkshire Trails'. (http://yorkshiretrails.co.uk) We wanted to see if the trails would be suitable for our guests.  The trails are based around themes where you become the detectives.  The one we followed is looking for where the treasure lies buried.  You have a map where you cross off places as you discover the clues and solve the puzzle, until you are left with the location of the treasure.

The trail we were following starts at the Swinsty Reservoir car park.  It's a great favourite among Harrogate locals for walks.   However, ours was a short stop. It was a warm day,  so we decided to enjoy a locally produced ice cream before searching for the clues.  The clues were easy to find and we quickly solved the puzzles,  crossing off two locations. Next we headed, as per the trail instructions to the pretty Dales village of Appletreewick via Bolton.

We would normally have stopped at Bolton to visit the Abbey, take a walk by the river and see Barden Tower and possibly lunch at the Devonshire Arms.  However, we pressed on to Appletreewick via this scenic route and had a great time finding the clues and visiting the two pubs.  The trail then took us on to the equally picturesque village of Hebden.  Here we had a bit of walking through sheep fields and over styles before crossing the river on the swinging suspension bridge in order to discover the clues. We arrived back too late for the Old School Cafe which closes at 5pm.

So feeling the need for refreshments, we decided to head home at this point having completed half the trail. We had thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and felt the time had been well spent.

The Dales were beautiful in the Spring sunshine.  It was a delight to see the lambs frolicking and to walk beside the bubbling streams.  We recon you can do this trail if you set out from Harrogate by 10:00.  However, as we had set out after lunch we had not allowed sufficient time.  The makers recommend 5+ hours.  It can also be done across several days, which would give time to visit Bolton Abbey, Barden Tower and to lunch at the Devonshire Arms.  Each trail takes in different locations and areas around Harrogate and the Dales.

As we have enjoyed the trail so much,  we have decided to add these trails, free of charge for our guests to enjoy.

These trails are a great way to explore the Dales, their history, and see things you might otherwise miss. The walking is easy.  The directions can be a bit tricky to follow as the path is not always obvious. We did take a wrong turn at Hebden.  But soon realised our mistake, backtracked and discovered the correct path.

It took us 20 minutes to return to Harrogate.

In the Dales everything stops at around 5pm.  Local pubs only offer snacks. There are very few restaurants or eateries.  Harrogate is the hub where there are  approximately 250 food outlets,  many open late, and supermarkets.  There is also plenty of evening entertainment from theatrical productions to some amazing shows and two cinemas.

On wet days you will require good walking boots.  I wore trainers my husband wore walking boots.  Always take wet weather coats and wear layers as weather in the Dales can be very changeable!

There are just so many trails to choose from starting in and around Harrogate- enjoy!
