Walk around Swinsty and Fewston Resevoirs

May 24, 2024

A light summer stroll

Last weekend I took the dog for a walk around Swinsty and Fewston resevoirs. This is something I had been meaning to do with him since May as I love going there. The walk is very easy and is a popular one for families and dog owners.

Most people stay for about two hours choosing to either walk around Swinsty or Fewston. However, I was feeling adventurous and decided to do both. This took five hours in the end.

Picnics and refreshments.

Fewston Reservoir has no conveniences, whilst Swinsty has two ice cream stands, picnic tables and public toilets. This is possibly why most people stick to Swinsty, if they are only going to walk around one. However, if you want to get away from the crowds or you are feeling up for more of a challenge I recommend doing Fewston.

Parking

There is no free parking for either reservoir. There are three parking zones, two for Swinsty and one for Fewston. I would recommend parking at Harrogate HG3 1SU for Swinsty Reservoir and North Lane Otley LS21 2NP if you are planning to do both.

Why visit Fewston and Swinsty?

The reason I love these reservoirs is the peace I feel, some of the walk is tree lined, there is a sense of space and getting away from things.  It’s a great way to find inner peace.  The water is tranquil, and changes with the time of day, the weather, the time of year.  The light on water has always held a fascination for me.  Children can be asked to find things, a grass hopper, a blue tit, some wild flower, it’s amazing what is to be found as you walk and just how easy it can be to make up games.  It brings back happy childhood memories.

Fewston and Swinsty Reservoirs are both a short drive from our cottages.  We also provide maps created by Treasure Trails, a fun and creative way to explore both reservoirs.
