Yorkshire Walks
March 14, 2025Harrogate is a great place to go walking. There are a number of wonderful trails for you to do.
Here is a list of some our favourites.
The Tolken Trail
Have you ever wanted to walk in the footsteps of one our Britains's greatest writers?
It is said that this was the very trail Tolken would walk to get inspiration and walk his dog. Referenced in the Hobbit, forming the start of Bilbo's journey from Hobbiton to the misty mountains.
For Tolken fans it is like stepping into middle earth, and for the rest of the human race it is a pleasant river walk.
The Nidd Gorge and Knaresborough to Bilton Circular
This 10km walk is perfect for family groups. Usually considered a moderate walk due to the sharp inline towards the end. It is great for those wanting a bit more adventure for their active children.
There are serval benches along Nidd Gorge itself, great for those who are not as steady on their feet or with little legs. We would recommend proper footwear as the ground can be unsteady underfoot, especially if it has been raining. Mud slides have been known to happen.
The gorge itself is absolutely stunning. For those wanting a shorter or more gentle walk, we recommend sticking to the Knarebprough River circular which is a 20min walk around a stretch of the river ouse, in the centre of Knareborough.
Swinsty and Fewston Reservoirs
Another one for a sunny day. This is a great one for those who not like getting their feet wet or covered in mud. There are good sturdy paths and plenty of places to sit and rest.
There is also a couple of places to purchase some rather nice ice cream. You can make this one as long or short as you want. For a short easy walk, we would recommend walking around Fewston only.
However, if you are up to the challenge, the best experience is the Swinsty and Fewston Circular, usually taking around 2hours and 30mins to complete.
Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle Circular
For the true adventures. Not for the faint hearted, this walk takes in some of the best views in Yorkshire. Taking around 3hours to complete is you walk quickly, it includes the magnificent Asygarth Falls, stunning views from Bolton Catstle (tickets needed for entry) finishing off with a lovely stroll through the open countryside.
The walk also includes several steady inclines, which is what gives the walk its difficulty rating.
Brimham Rocks
One for the family. There is a lovely cafe and book shop to be found and plenty of short trails around what remains of the pre-historic glaciers. Stunning views and plenty for children to explore.
Please stay within your abilities. Climbing is allowed, but should be done under parental supervision.
Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
For experienced hikers only! Do not attempt unless you are at your peak physical condition!
That said there is nothing like the feeling of completing this challenge. Please see their website for full information and not not attempt without at least one experienced hiker, i.e someone who has completed it before.
This challenge is not for the faint hearted.
